The heartwood and sapwood of red oak are similar in appearance - light-colored with a reddish tone. Red oak is slightly redder in color that white oak, which has a white to cream to light-brown color. The graining of red oak is open and somewhat coarser (so more porous) than that of white oak which tends to have longer rays.
